Electrosmog, the underestimated danger Part 1: Limits, frequencies, health

The 5G expansion is booming. Networking with the planned Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 is constantly advancing. Throughout the pandemic, working from home has almost become the new norm. At the same time, more and more electrical or electronic devices are finding their way into our personal and social lives. In a completely networked world the exposure has multiplied. In fact, there will be basically no more escape from a permanent frequency cocktail of radio radiation and electrical or electromagnetic fields, unless we set up radio-free zones, according to Professor Dr.-Ing. Wilfried Kühling and his paper published in 2021.

1. What is electrosmog?

The term electrosmog consists simply and separately from the word parts; “Electro” (for electrical devices or electricity) and the term “smog”. The latter part of the word is derived from the English term for smoke or fog. It was originally associated with negative effects and characteristics of the industrial revolution, due to the unfavorable effects of smoke or mist on the respiratory tract, the circulatory system and overall health.

This “bad fog or smoke” could then be perceived with the senses (sight / smell). It was adopted in general terms with the invention of electricity and electric or electromagnetic fields, when there started to be a growing awareness of their potential negative effects.

A closer look at e-smog

Having said that, the term “electrosmog” is a bit misleading because you can’t see, smell, taste or touch electrosmog in a traditional sense. You can, however, measure it with modern measuring devices. These are electrical or magnetic interference fields that emanate from all electrical applications through voltage and current in the form of fields or waves.

Electrosmog as a harmful part of electricity or radiation

Specifically, electrosmog is the amount of electricity or radiation that cause disruptive effects through “unwanted influence on the environment”. (High-voltage lines, for example, not only give off waste heat, but also electricity / e-smog to the environment “unintentionally”). This  is why electromagnetic fields pose a problem with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). In other words, not a real, but rather an invisible “smoke or fog”. In a nutshell, we recognise that there have been both advantages and disadvantages since the invention of electricity and artificially pulsed radio waves.

Electrosmog can be measured

One of the great misunderstandings that goes along with the understanding of electrosmog is that we are unable to see, smell, taste or touch electrosmog, or that many people do not react to it like electrosensitive people. This is why it is then concluded that electrosmog is not real. However, it is the physical effect that also generates interference fields through the use of electricity, electronics, radio, radar, etc. and thus “unintentionally” negatively affects people, nature, the environment and even the electronics themselves.

The scope, strength and intensity of the fields or waves that occur can now even be measured and calculated using modern measuring devices. We could also conclude that there are no problems with official guide values ​​or limit values, leaving you completely helpless regarding e-smog. This is not the case, and you can take health precautions,for instance, by shielding or purchasing low-radiation / free devices, etc.

Advantages and disadvantages of radiation and electricity

Advantages:

With the invention of electricity or mobile telephony and its numerous applications, the widespread and general idea came about that these technologies were only felt as a benefit and progress, which of course is true to a degree. Radio makes it possible to call a rescue helicopter or an emergency doctor.  Electricity allows us to use a light source and a million options from electric toothbrushes to hair dryers to electric cars, etc. are at our fingertips. More and more electrical applications or electrical or radio-controlled devices are being used.

Disadvantages:

The good is also accompanied by constant radio or e-smog exposure in workplaces, living areas, and the environment. For those who have developed finer sensitivity for the impulsive artificial waves or fields, the increasing e-smog and radio wave exposure is increasingly becoming a curse. For a growing number of people, called ‘electrosensitive’, it is often associated with pain. They seem to increasingly suffer from the artificial interference fields generated by humans and can only live in a shielded state or far away from any radio waves or electrical and electromagnetic fields. I will go into more detail about this later.

2. Natural and artificial fields

An often underestimated but important point to help understand the negative effects of electrosmog is the fact that we have adapted to natural fields for millions of years. We have now created artificial electric or electromagnetic waves or fields that generate so-called electrosmog which our body can cope with quite well with appropriate breaks. But with the increasing 5G network expansion it is becoming a growing threat to life, as I already described in detail in my article on the harmful effects of mobile communications on animals, plants and insects.

Natural direct current and artificial alternating current

There is a big difference between the natural direct current fields (sun, geomagnetism, etc.) and artificially generated alternating current fields (electricity, mobile communications or radar, etc.), which do not occur in nature. This is why the artificial fields or rays cause negative effects not only when it comes to electro-sensitive people, with research having been confirming this for decades.

Interestingly, some of these studies show gene or cell damage, by mobile radio, for instance. The current limit values ​​would actually have to be reduced considerably to be effective, because right now they do not really protect.

Limit values ​​that are supposed to protect, but often don’t

The harmful effect of the various radiation areas, frequencies or electromagnetic fields also depends on the level of the respective frequencies or fields. In other words, there is a limit to what is manageable. And these limits or limit values ​​are unfortunately often adapted to economic interests, which is why a decade-long battle over the legally anchored limit values ​​is raging.

Thermal effects are allowed, non-thermal effects are denied and contested

In mobile communications, for example, only thermal effects are used as a basis for decision-making when determining the limit values. At the same time, other effects and  studies are completely denied, discredited or even deliberately ignored. The authenticity of the research results of the REFLEX study, for instance, has now  been confirmed in court, as I described in my article on hypersensitivity.

Opposing interests

As early as in 2005, Dr. Gerd Oberfeld, environmental physician at the State Medical Directorate Salzburg, speaker of the Austrian Medical Association in the Austrian Medical Magazine (issue 6, 2005) says: Quote:

“In order to protect individual and public health, these target values ​​are proposed based on current scientific and empirical knowledge: GSM mobile communications outdoors 10 µW / m², indoors 1 µW / m².”

While Prof. Dr. Jürgen Bernhardt, former chairman of the industry-related committee of the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection), which publishes the limit value recommendations, publicly commented: Quote:

“If you reduce the limit values, you destroy the economy, and Germany as a business location is endangered.”

With it the worldwide growing and now worsening dilemma of opposing economic and health interests becomes more and more evident. But before we embark on the public discussion of supporters and critics, let’s take a closer look at which applications and devices actually cause e-smog.

3. Which technical applications or devices cause harmful effects / electrosmog?

If we look at everything around us that sparks, radiates or generates e-smog, we soon come to the conclusion that basically almost everything that is based on artificially pulsed alternating current fields is for us and all living beings that are genetically connected to natural direct current fields are adapted, have a disruptive effect or are more or less harmful:

  • Radio transmitter
  • Cell phones
  • Cordless phones
  • Cell phones
  • Display devices, computers
  • Power lines
  • Mains voltages with 230 V / 50 Hz. (Electric power cable),
  • Microwave ovens
  • Clock radio
  • Heating pads / electric blankets
  • Fridges / Freezers
  • Devices with an electric drive (including electric cars etc.)
  • Electric heaters and other electrical equipment
  • Electrostatic charges and electronic body aids, etc.

The disruption of technical devices by e-smog

It is not only us, humans, or plants, animals and insects who react sensitively to electrosmog or radio radiation: We all know the announcement in airplanes: “Please switch off your cell phones or laptops” so as not to disturb the on-board computer when taking off. The negative effect of e-smog also has an impact on many technical devices, for instance:

  • Radios
  • Televisions
  • Audio systems
  • Video systems
  • Antenna systems
  • Cable systems
  • Satellite receiving systems
  • Computers
  • Motor vehicles
  • Electrical and electronic household appliances
  • or Portable electronic devices and much more.

4. Radiation areas from electrosmog

We can generally subdivide electrosmog into 5 radiation areas:

  • Alternating electrical fields (low frequency)
  • Alternating magnetic fields (low frequency)
  • Electromagnetic waves (high frequency)
  • Electric constant fields (electrostatics)
  • Magnetic constant fields (magnetostatics)

Official limit values ​​for mobile communications

The following figure of the Information Center for Mobile Telecommunications shows the health recommendations of 10 µW / m² outdoors, 1 µW / m² indoors (microwatts per m² / millionths of a watt) for effects that are harmless to health, right up to 5G Frequency ranges of 61 V / m² newly recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICNIRP) differ:

It is interesting that the law on protection against electrosmog does not apply to cell phones or household appliances, as an article on www.elektrosmog.com reveals. These are therefore excluded from this, although they also generate electrosmog.

Quote:

“The law on protection against non-ionizing radiation when used on humans (NiSG) applies to the operation of systems for medical use as well as commercially used systems with applications outside of medicine. To protect the general public from the effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields, limit values ​​are specified in the Ordinance on Electromagnetic Fields (26th Ordinance on the Federal Immission Control Act, 26th BImSchV). Non-stationary sources such as household appliances or cell phones are not covered by the 26th BImSchV. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) supports the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations on preventive health protection. Against this background, the BfS plans to intensify research to clarify the data situation and to strengthen communication in this area.”

5. Electrosmog, a growing everyday problem?

Depending on the extent to which our immune system is intact and to which we are exposed to electromagnetic interference fields, our immune defense will do its best to neutralize the artificial radiation. It will try to repair the damage, but overall, this also comes with more physical stress as exposure increases and global networks grow. It is  becoming more difficult for our immune systems to counteract this naturally (through sleep, vacation in radio-free areas, etc.).

Even our authorities have been unsure for some time where this situation of progressive total networking will lead.

Quote (Gunhild Lütge, October 20, 2005, Die Zeit: Does mobile radio make you sick?):

“Even the Radiation Protection Commission, which advises the federal government and is not suspected of exaggerating dangers, warns in its annual report: ‘An increasingly pressing problem is that the number of devices that produce electromagnetic fields in the human environment is increasing dramatically. ‘ Each individual device remains below the limit values, but overall there is a risk that they will be exceeded. In addition, these values ​​are a kind of auxiliary construction. They only rule out the possibility of tissue heating. However, whether radiation exposure below the limit values ​​is harmful is still a controversial issue. There are first indications of this, but no scientific evidence yet.”

Despite these serious concerns, the expansion of the grid continues unabated and more and more electrical devices are finding their way into our everyday lives. In the age of robotics and the expected industrial progress, we don’t want to hear about it, and those warming others might be referred to as conspiracy theorists or pessimists.

6. Diseases and complaints that can be triggered by electrosmog

So let’s take a closer look at the health aspects of what electrosmog does with us on a physical, mental or emotional level, in addition to the already “recognized thermal effect”. Numerous studies or long-term observations by doctors have shown that widespread mobile communications:

  • disturb sleep
  • the response time changes
  • restrict the function of the blood-brain barrier
  • leads to poor concentration
  • cause headaches, fatigue, insomnia, malaise and memory loss
  • the sperm count decreases
  • decrease melatonin production
  • DNA strands breaks
  • cell perforation increases
  • cause blood pressure to rise
  • pacemakers may be affected
  • increases the risk of cancer, especially brain tumors in humans.

This reveals a general malaise that can be traced back to hormone levels or cell communication, etc. and brings us to the subject of publicly disputed, non-thermal effects.

Electrosmog, melatonin deficiency and its health consequences

With the ever increasing social problem with sleep disorders, chronic fatigue or states of exhaustion (keyword burnout) in an increasingly electronic or radio networked world, a connection with the melatonin deficiency, a hormone that is produced in the pineal gland and from day-night Rhythm is controlled, can be established. Cellular communications are known to have a negative impact on melatonin levels. Less melatonin (and inner balance) then causes depression, restlessness or sleep disorders, and, as a result, weakens the immune system. Restful sleep works wonders, as we all know.

Melatonin also catches free radicals (more aggressive molecules that cause genetic changes in cells and thus can cause cancer), which is why a lack of melatonin means an increased risk of cancer.

ATP

Similarly to melatonin, adenosine triphosphate, or ATP for short, is incredibly important for us, especially for our energy and performance balance. It is our energy supplier, needed for all mental and physical work. Our brain itself synthesizes it in the mitochondria, the power plants of the cells. Cellular communications, heavy cell phone consumption, WLAN, screen radiation, etc. lower the ATP level and weaken our performance. This is why we feel emaciated and exhausted even after long screen work.
